Built in the second century AD, this temple was part of a large civilian settlement which grew up around Benwell Fort and Hadrian's Wall (no longer visible here).

The Romans allowed many different cults and religions. People were free to worship a variety of Gods. This temple was dedicated to Antenociticus, who could have been a local God, or one favoured by the Vangiones, troops from the upper Rhineland, Germany, based at the fort.

At the far end of the temple there was a stone block for the statue of the God, with an altar on either side. The altars here are copies; the originals, and the head from the statue of Antenociticus, are displayed in the Museum of Antiquities in Newcastle.
